Mentor Orphan Roger Kiser's Advice:
My advise to other orphans would be to subject yourself
to as many family oriented situations as possible
before considering marriage. It is also necessary
that all orphans take someİform of marriage and parenting
classes. Most orphans have been raised in a very incarcerated,
prison style environment.İWhich is a very controlled
lifestyle. They must first learn something that they
have never been subjected to. Something called "Freedom"
and "Choice". Common sense tells us that if a man,
or a woman,İwere imprisoned for eighteen years, and
then released, İthatİthey would have to adaptİthemselves
toİa lifestyle considered normal by the rest of society.
It is also important that orphans stopİsearching for
"the high" that they get when they first meet a new
partner. Orphans tend to think that they have fallen
out of loveİevery time that that feeling goes away.
They then move on down the road in search of another
relationship. By the time they realize that the problem
is within them they have aged many years and have
been married many, manyİtimes. In short I feel that
it is important that all orphans try and force themselves
to feel "emotion". They must learn to useİtheir emotional
abilities rather than using their logical minds when
making emotional decisionsİin their lives.
Published author and internet writer Roger Dean Kiser's
stories take you into the heart of a child abandoned
by his family and abused by the system responsible
for his care. Through his stories he relives the sadness
and cruelty of growing up an orphan in the early 1950s.
Roger has never forgotten how he and 300 other children
were treated as though they were less than human while
living in a Jacksonville, Florida orphanage in the
1950s-60s.
Kiser states "Many orphanages in the United
States have changed their policies. Much of the physical
and mental abuse has ceased mainly because of out-cries from
the general public. However, the orphan children are
still treated as though they are prisoners. Years of
incarceration in these institutions do not prepare these
children for life in the real world. When finally released
they have become institutionalized and do
not know how to function in a normal family setting.
Most go from relationship to relationship, year after
year, not having the slightest idea that something is
wrong. Children living in these facilities must be given
some of the freedoms afforded to children who have parents.
They must be allowed, during the informative years, to
be subjected to friends who have families. They
must learn that a prison style, incarcerated environment
is not a correct and proper life style. Common sense
tells us that children raised in this type of a prison
setting are headed for a lifetime of disaster."
Today
Kiser is an advocate for children's rights. He lives
in Brunswick, Georgia with his wife Judy, where he
continues to write, publishing most of his work on his
internet web site: http://www.rogerdeankiser.com
and short story index at: "http://www.geocities.com/trampolineone/survive/noframe.htm".
Since
it's beginning "The Sad Orphan Web Site" (American
Orphan) has become one of the most read child abuse
web sites in the world. At last count it had a readership
of about 4.6 million since November of 1999.
It
is through his writing that Kiser has begun healing
the pain, suffering and sadness of the orphan within
him. Unknowingly at first and by the power of the internet
Kiser's stories have touched millions.
In
the vain of Mark Twain Roger Dean Kiser's collection
of almost 400 stories have captured the drama and emotion
of not only his childhood but of his current day tales.
Kiser's short stories carry with them strong images
and feelings that search out and find that common thread
which connects each of us to our own emotions.
Roger
Dean Kiser is the author of the book "Orphan, A
True Story of Abandonment, Abuse and Redemption."
Roger's
short stories have also been published in books and

film by Nicholas Delfino and Edward Asner (Mary Tyler
Moore Show) and has been entered into several major
film festivals in the United States.
Between
Edward Asner’s bustling, award winning career
and a busy political agenda the actor has still made
himself available to lend his support and voice to Roger
Dean Kiser.
Asner
is credited as a factor in the publishing of Kiser’s
first book Orphan in 2001 and was the Executive Producer
on the short film The Bully, written and directed by
Nicholas Delfino and adapted from the Kiser short story
by the same name. More recently he recorded two of Kiser’s
works Butterflies and Elvis Died in a Florida Barber
College as audio stories for Bear-Buca Entertainment.
Asner has also been very supportive in the development
of a possible feature film or television series based
on Kiser’s stories.
